In the author’s words
using God to protect the most unexamined parts of themselves. That is the terror of religious ego. It can kneel. It can worship. It can fast. It can preach. It can evangelize. It can cry during prayer. It can say the name of Jesus with trembling lips. And still refuse to die. The sanctified ego is the self hiding behind holy language. It does not want truth. It wants divine permission to feel superior. That is the enemy this book has been circling from the beginning. Not Christianity. Not Jesus. Not sincere faith. Not scripture. Not the soul that is honestly seeking God. The enemy is the ego that uses God as armor. The ego that takes the Infinite and turns it into a shield for its own certainty. The ego that takes Jesus and turns him into a weapon. The ego that takes scripture and turns it into ammunition. The ego that takes concern and turns it into pressure. The ego that takes salvation and turns it into submission. That is not holiness.
